Opportunity and Support

Futures uses a range of strategies to strengthen young families and connect them to the community. Input from teen parents is an integral part of program design. Their opinions are sought through yearly surveys and weekly support groups.

Services include:

  • Case management and advocacy services;
  • Home-visiting services;
  • Parenting and child development education through classes, home visits and playgroups;
  • Outreach and specialized services for young fathers;
  • Support groups;
  • Topical workshops;
  • Monthly family fun activities to promote healthy lifestyle choices;
  • Educational and job readiness counseling;
  • Book distributions and early learning activities;
  • Drop-in services at the Young Family Resource Center;
  • Leadership training and opportunities.

Futures Teen Family Advocates are professionals with backgrounds in social work or education who have the special skills and training needed to form positive relationships with adolescent parents. In the context of this relationship with a caring adult, Futures offers young parents individualized case management with opportunities for decision-making, goal-setting and barrier reduction. This enables teens to work toward completing their education and to develop the skills to be nurturing parents to their babies and toddlers.

Education is seen as the key to breaking the cycle of poverty as well as preventing abuse and neglect. We strive to provide young parents with the information, opportunities, and support systems they need to make the important decisions and healthy choices that will affect their lives and those of their children.
