MVP: The Gender Violence Problem

  • 20% of female high school students report being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner (NRCDV).
  • 40% of girls age 14-17 report knowing someone their age who was hit or beaten by a boyfriend (Children Now: Kaiser Permanente Poll, 1995)
  • 8% of high school age girls said "yes" when asked if "a boyfriend ever forced sex against [their] will" (The Commonwealth Survey of the Health of Adolescent Girls, 1997).
  • Young women aged 12-18 who are victims of violence are more likely than older women to report that their offenders were acquaintances, friends or intimate partners. For rapes committed on college campuses, 80-95% are committed by someone known to the victim (CDC).
