Schools see shocking increase in homeless students

Missoula Independent, Oct 29, 2009 by Alex Sakariassen
When Kristi Gough heard the number of homeless students attending Franklin Elementary School this year, she was downright shocked. • Remember those living in poverty
Missoulian Online, Oct 27, 2009 by Terry Kendrick

As we all watch for signs that the economy is improving, any ray of hope is welcome relief. The big picture of the economy might be getting a bit brighter, but for many Montana families things are getting tougher.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released new data that paint a disturbing economic picture. The number of people living in poverty in the United States and here in Montana is growing. Nationally, the number of people living in poverty grew by 2.6 million in 2008. In our state, before the recession really took hold, nearly 140,000 residents lived in poverty. That's one in every seven Montanans

  • Protect our kids from violence
Missoulian Online, Oct 15, 2009 by Diana Thompson, et al.
Often when we think of domestic violence, we think of physical violence - when one partner is hitting another. However, many say the most painful kind of abuse is the emotional and verbal abuse that is prevalent in abusive relationships. Additionally, domestic violence doesn't just hurt the woman or man being hit or hurt. Family violence hurts the entire family and has an especially harsh impact on children.

  • Healthy Start: Parents are constant teacher for kids
Missoulian online, Oct 13, 2009 by Jeanne Moon

I lived in a small rural town when my daughter was born, far from family and friends. I wasn't too far along as a parent when I realized I needed connections with other parents to help me on this journey.

Although I was quite capable of reading books on parenting topics, access to parenting information was limited with no Internet, library or bookstores. I headed to the local school and joined the parent-teacher association. And so my "parent involvement" journey began.

  • HEALTHY START COUNCIL - Playing games helps develop young emotions
Missoulian online, Jul 14, 2009 by BRANDI HENRY and STACEY McCLURE
Recently, while visiting with a 3-year-old, I was reminded how joyful little errors in communication can be. We had spent the earlier part of our visit discussing respect. As we were transitioning into another activity, the child got excited. In an attempt to express his anticipation, he blurted, “I RESPECT to go OUTSIDE!” It reminded me that children are not born understanding all of their emotions. Read the complete story ..

  • Wisdom of the ages
Ravalli Republic online, 1-20-09 by SEPP JANNOTTA

One child said earnestly that he wondered if there was a road through youth that might bypass the pain of being bullied at school.
“How you react to it is going to mean a lot as to how you get along, and not just in school, but in life,” retired Realtor Russ Kearns said in response. “You can’t take everything to heart because if you did you’d be fighting everybody.” Read the complete story ..

  • Can We Have a WORD? - By Gretchen L. Langton
    Bitterroot Star, Jan 28, 2009
"Schools alone can’t educate children," says Jeanne Moon, Program Director for our local Family Resource Centers. She cites educational researcher Herbert Walbert, who found that "twelve years of 180 six-hour days in school equal only thirteen percent of a student’s learning time in eighteen years."

  • Healthy Start - Start early preparing child with school skills

The Missoulian Feb 10, by JENNIFER CALDER
Preparation for kindergarten happens long before the first day of school. It’s a journey the family and child prepare for from the very beginning. To be successful, a child needs to develop a wide variety of skills: social and emotional skills, such as the ability to express needs and recognize feelings or interact well with others; physical skills, like being able to hold a pencil, use scissors, or sit at a desk or table; and cognitive skills, such as recognizing some of the letters in their name.
